W.C.E.I.R.D. (West Cork Education Institute for Rural Development)

The West Cork Education Institute for Rural Development was founded by the County Cork Vocational Education Committee in 1982 and operates under the aegis of the West Cork Adult Education Service.

The Institute Aspires to:

  • foster links between education and economic development in the rural environment;
  • assist the development of local resources;
  • upgrade skills within rural communities in order to enhance long-term employment prospects;
  • enhance the employment prospects of the disadvantaged and marginalised and promote social inclusion through provision of second chance education programmes.

The Institute works in co-operation with a wide range of State and Semi-State agencies, voluntary organisations, business firms and financial institutions to plan training programmes, to research resources and to promote and develop the enterprise concept.
